Introduction

This document describes the process on how to generate license key file from Product Authorization Key (PAK) file for Cisco Email Security Appliance (ESA), Web Security Appliance (WSA) and Security Management Appliance (SMA).

I've read that Cisco Router owners can use the Basic version of Network Magic without charge. If this is the case, how do I get the activation key for the basic edition, or does the trial version I'm using revert to basic at the end of the trial period? Nov 16, 2010  I've got my problem fixed with a little help from the Cisco License Team. I got a new authorization key which didn't include my 'Anyconnect for Mobile' license. I've simply updated the authorization key with the one provided by the license team, performed a reboot and it works great now.

Question

How to generate license key file from PAK file that has been received for ESA, WSA and SMA.

  1. If you update your Cisco.com account with your WebEx/Spark email address, you can link your accounts in the future (which enables you to access secure Cisco, WebEx, and Spark resources using your WebEx/Spark login).
  2. Note Starting from Release 15.4(1)T, the license-level appxk9 is removed from the license boot module command and licensing show commands for the Cisco 3900, 2900, and 1900 Series Routers. The license-level appxk9 is available for Cisco ISR 4400 and ISR 4300 routers in the license boot level command.
  3. As we are doing Lab not working at this moment in production environment, we only need to picturize the scenario. Reason I am saying like this is if you see at the below output of sh version from the ASA before activating the license, we will see a dummy Key is there like below for the device serial no 123456789AB.

A PAK file is normally received via email after the purchase of license(s) and normally in the form of a PDF attachment.

Procedure to apply and generate licenses

Below is the procedure to register the PAK file and generate the license key file for ESA, WSA and SMA:

  • Go to http://www.cisco.com/go/license and log in using your CCO id.
  • Click on to 'Continue to Product License Registration' button.
  • From the next screen, Click on 'Add New PAKs/Tokens' link.
  • Enter the PAK number and 'Submit'. Please see below example:
  • Tick the PAK/Token ID listed.
  • Click the 'Actions' drop down box.
  • Select 'Get New Licenses'. Please see below for example:
  • Click on 'Next' button from the next screen.
  • Select the appliance type whether the PAK number is for Physical appliance or Virtual appliance.
  • Enter the serial number of the appliance. Please enter the serial number of the appliance after the '-' sign.

For example:

The serial number is 888F89E88F88-8V88TW8, please enter just '8V88TW8' in the 'SN/Virtual Device Identifier' box.

  • Enter the correct 'Send To' email address to receive the license key file.
  • Enter the 'End User' information for this request.
  • 'Tick' the check box to accept the Terms of the License Agreement.
  • 'Submit' the request.

  • Once submitted, a confirmation page will be displayed.
  • Please allow at least 30 minutes for the license key file to be sent to the 'Send To' email address.
